Recycling and Sustainability update (SSP to be commissioned in Q3 2022)

With Australia’s waste export ban looming, arguably, the biggest challenge and opportunity for 2022 will be finding new applications for recycled content across all markets.

Over the past 12 months, we have seen a significant shift in brand owners and converters looking to incorporate recycled content back into products/packaging, and no doubt this trend will continue as we fast approach 2025.

Food Grade recycled PET (marPET®)

In 2021, Martogg commissioned a third Vacurema® line bringing the collective production capacity of Food Grade rPET (marPET®) to 23,000 tonnes p/annum.

In Q3 2022, Martogg will commission an SSP Unit to its third and largest Vacurema® line. SSP stands for “Solid State Polycondensation” and works to further boost the IV (intrinsic viscosity) of our marPET®, thereby broadening the applications in which it can be used (ie carbonated beverages).

Food Grade recycled HDPE (marLENE® HDPE)

Following the installation of a Refresher® Unit in 2021, Martogg’s Food Grade recycled HDPE resin (marLENE®) was commercialised in early 2022 and made available to brand owners and converters.

The Refresher® unit will convert 4500 tonnes p/annum of Food Grade rHDPE (marLENE®) which is suitable for use at up to 100% recycled content for use in food contact applications.

Non-Food Grade recycled polymers

Recycled content doesn’t end at Food Packaging. In fact, Martogg has long been converting pre-consumer (PIR) and post-consumer (PCR) plastics since its inception in 1975.

See below for an extensive list of recycled polymers catering to all industry markets:

  • Flexible Polyethylene resins suitable for a wide range of blown film applications such as industrial films, packaging films and irrigation products. These resins are a variety of resins and colours.

  • Rigid Polyethylene resins catering to pipe and profile extrusion, as well as blow moulding resins. Available in colour ranging from clear to black and raw materials selected based on product requirements.

  • Polypropylene resins both PIR and PCR, catering for extrusion and injection moulding applications with both stock and custom formulations, incorporating additives such as talc, calcium carbonate and glass fibre reinforcing.

  • A range of Styrene and ABS compounds for injection moulding applications.
